New LG BD590 Blu-ray player sports a 250GB hard drive

LG BD590 Blu-ray player
Like the LG BD390, the new LG Blu-ray player has WiFi, BD Live, VUDU and DLNA, what's new is the 250GB hard drive. Now the first thing we thought of when we heard LG was including a hard drive was Managed Copy, but there's no mention of it in the press release. What is in there though is the ability to download VUDU movies, pictures, music and more to it. This is especially useful if your Blu-ray player isn't well connected since it allows you to sneaker net your content or to copy it over and play it back later. There's no mention of price or availability, but this guy does have two little brothers, the BD550 and BD570, that feature many of the same internet features, but don't have a hard drive.

LG to ship HDTVs with WHDI wireless technology baked in

No one ever said you couldn't play both sides of the fence when it comes to wireless technologies, and it seems that LG is doing precisely that at CES. LG has previously shipped HDTVs with WirelessHD technology built in, but today the company is announcing a new partnership with AMIMON. The reason for the ruckus? The outfit is fixing to ship a wireless HDTV product line with second-generation WHDI technology built in, enabling 1080p content to be sent from a source to the HDTV sans wires over a 5GHz unlicensed band. Mum's the word on what sets will have WHDI baked in, but we'll be sure to dig up anything we can once the show floor opens up here in Vegas. In related news, 15 other companies have decided to drink the WHDI Kool-Aid, and you can read more on that whole shindig after the break.

Netgear intros EVA9100 media streamer, DGN2200M WiFi / WWAN modem and more at CES

Some crazy stuff is going down in Vegas -- fancy that, right? Netgear is doing its darnedest to make its own scene with the introduction of three new items here at CES, so we won't waste any time in breaking 'em down. Up first is the now-available $249 Digital Entertainer Express (EVA9100), which incorporates the media prowess found in the EVA9150 in order to give users instant access to "Blu-ray quality digital video up to 1080p, MP3s and high-resolution digital photos from PCs, Macs or NAS devices." Portals to YouTube, Flickr and RSS feeds will be readily available, and the free trial of PlayOn will provide access to Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, BBC iPlayer and CBS.

Next, we've got the $179.99 DGN2200M wireless router (available in April), which actually pulls double duty as an 802.11n-enabled DSL modem and a WWAN modem. Hailed as the only wireless-N product on the retail market with dual WAN capabilities, this one can get users online via a 3G or 4G USB dongle whenever they leave their home broadband connection. Finally, the $159 Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter (XAV2501) -- which will ship early next month -- enables homeowners to create a 10/100 Ethernet connection from any ordinary electrical outlet that already supports a powerline network. This one's also a HomePlug AV-certified device, so it should have no issues pushing through data at up to 200Mbps. We'll be scouring the show floor for a little hands-on action, so stay tuned!

NETGEAR Expands Family of Award-Winning Digital Media Players with Introduction of Digital Entertainer Express

Advanced Digital Media Player Optimized for full 1080p Playback of Personal Media
Collections and Internet Content; Powerful Media Scanning and Search Feature Enables Easy
Access to Digital, Internet and RSS Videos, Photos and MP3s on HDTVs

LAS VEGAS - January 6, 2010 - NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically innovative, branded networking solutions, today announced the worldwide launch of the Digital Entertainer Express (EVA9100), a powerful and flexible digital media player that enables consumers to easily enjoy and seamlessly stream personal digital media collections and Internet content over home networks to high-definition televisions. Providing all of the playback performance and video reliability of the Digital Entertainer Elite (EVA9150), the Digital Entertainer Express is an ideal solution for the serious media enthusiast. It incorporates the latest video and audio technologies to deliver an unparalleled home theater entertainment experience.

The Digital Entertainer Express adds to the NETGEAR family of Internet-connected set-top boxes, which also includes the Digital Entertainer Elite (EVA9150) and Digital Entertainer Live (EVA2000). NETGEAR will highlight its family of Digital Entertainers along with its home media storage server, Stora, at two press events today in conjunction with the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. "See today's press release, "NETGEAR Introduces New Solutions at Consumer Electronics Show To Enable Any Media on Any Screen, Anywhere at Anytime" at http://www.netgear.com/About/PressReleases/en-US/2010/20100105a.aspx.

"Consumers' digital media collections are growing every year. And, more and more, they have digital content stored on their computers, USB hard drives, network storage devices, iPods®, digital cameras, etc.," said Lionel Paris, product line manager for NETGEAR entertainment products. "The Digital Entertainer Express scans all the content connected to the player either directly via USB port or over the home network so that it is easily accessible for immediate playback - all with the latest video and audio

News Release
decoding. When combined with NETGEAR Stora™ and one of our routers, the Digital Entertainer
Express completes the ultimate connected home entertainment solution for our customers."
The Digital Entertainer Express' unique technology enables consumers to seamlessly stream M2TS via pre-buffering and play Blu-ray™ quality digital video up to 1080p. They can also play MP3, multichannel WAV and FLAC files and high-resolution digital photos from PCs, Macs® or Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, such as NETGEAR Stora. Consumers can also enjoy Internet content, such as Internet radio (over 250 stations), Flickr™, RSS feeds and videos from popular websites.

Furthermore, with an included free trial and subsequent special discount of PlayOn™ software, consumers can view hit TV shows and movies on their TVs from a wide variety of Internet sources, such as Hulu™, Netflix®, Amazon Video On Demand, BBC iPlayer and CBS™. Additionally, the Digital Entertainer Express supports an extensive selection of digital media file formats and codecs. For a full list, visit http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA9100.aspx.

The Digital Entertainer Express incorporates two USB ports for instant access to content on USB flash drives, digital cameras, iPods or other USB storage devices. It can also search and index files directly on the device, enabling users to navigate content across multiple networked PCs and devices at the same time. In fact, the Digital Entertainer Express automatically finds all digital media files on the home network and organizes them into an easily accessible library.
As one of the most flexible digital media players on the market, the Digital Entertainer Express can easily be connected to the Internet and home network in a variety of ways. Its integrated network port makes an Ethernet wired connection extremely simple. However, if consumers do not have an Ethernet connection available near their TV, they can use the optional Wireless USB Adapter (EVAW111) that connects the Digital Entertainer Express to the Internet and the home network via Wi-Fi®. Alternatively, they can also use existing electrical power outlets and a powerline device to connect the Digital Entertainer Express to the Internet and the home network, such as the NETGEAR Home Theater Internet Connection Kit
(XAVB1004), or either of the new powerline devices announced by NETGEAR at CES today, including the new Powerline 200 AV Adapter Kit (XAVB2001) and Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter Kit (XAVB2501) with a filtered "pass-through" power socket
(http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters.aspx).

Like many NETGEAR consumer devices, the Digital Entertainer Express features a simple "push button" way to connect to wireless routers called Push 'N' Connect. When it is used with the Wireless USB Adapter, consumers can easily and securely connect the Digital Entertainer Express to wireless networks without having to remember or input a password. The NETGEAR Digital Entertainer Express also includes environmentally friendly features, such as an energy-efficient power supply and automatic power-saving mode, which consume as little as .01 watts.
With two or more NETGEAR Digital Entertainer Express units, the "Follow Me" feature lets consumers pause a video in one room and resume it in another. "Exceptional growth in the availability of high quality, long tail content online is driving the growth for new media players and connected set-top boxes," said Jayant Dasari, broadband and television infrastructure and services research analyst at Parks Associates. "However, since the way consumers like
to acquire and enjoy their media collections varies from consumer to consumer, it's important for vendors to offer new options that bring online content directly to HDTVs. By increasing its family of Internetconnected
set-top boxes to include a feature-rich yet affordable solution, NETGEAR is poised to increase
its market share in the segment and become a primary player in the Internet-connected set-top box market."

Backed by full 24/7 technical support, the NETGEAR Digital Entertainer Express (EVA9100) is now available worldwide through leading retailers, e-commerce sites and value-added resellers. The Digital Entertainer Express (EVA9100) has an MSRP in the U.S. of $229, a lower entry price than its sister product, the Digital Entertainer Elite (EVA9150), to reflect its streamlined capabilities and features.

NETGEAR Plugs Two Powerful New HomePlug AV Powerline Networking Kits into Product Line-up at the Consumer Electronics Show

Advanced Design and Technology Improves Performance Up to 20 Percent Over Competing
Powerline Home Theater Solutions

LAS VEGAS - January 6, 2010 - NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically innovative, branded networking solutions, today expanded its award-winning family of powerline networking solutions with two new devices incorporating HomePlug® AV-certified powerline technology: the diminutive Powerline 200 AV Adapter Kit (XAVB2001) and the Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter Kit (XAVB2501) with a filtered "pass-through" power socket. These networking kits incorporate the latest in design and technology innovations to support performance surpassing that of existing
solutions by as much as 20 percent. These solutions enable high-performance applications such as HD video streaming, Voice over IP (VoIP), Internet gaming, and large file transfers to networked devices over existing electrical wiring in environments where wireless network performance may be challenged. NETGEAR will introduce its new products at two press events today in conjunction with the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. See today's press release, "NETGEAR Introduces New Solutions at Consumer Electronics Show To
Enable Any Media on Any Screen, Anywhere at Anytime"
at http://www.netgear.com/About/PressReleases/en-US/2010/20100105a.aspx.
Powerline technology enables consumers to create a 10/100 Ethernet connection from any ordinary electrical outlet, thus eliminating the need to run new cables and lowering the overall cost to deploy a high-speed data network. Consumers can extend the range of their home network with these affordable, simple-to-install adapters, especially those consumers who use Internet-connected devices that demand high bandwidth, such as the new NETGEAR Digital Entertainer Express (EVA9100), Elite (EVA9150) and Live (EVA2000) digital media players, Blu-ray™ players, TiVo®, Apple TV®, Xbox 360™, PlayStation® 3, DVRs, and network-enabled TVs. Moreover, because these new NETGEAR powerline kits are HomePlug AV-certified, they can easily and affordably extend any existing HomePlug AV network.

News Release
"Powerline has become an increasingly popular option for an always-on infrastructure because of the explosive growth in connected AV devices, and the high speeds and reliability required to support these demanding applications," said Chris Geiser, NETGEAR's product line manager for in-home distribution consumer products. "Home theater products need constant, shared and faster access to the Internet and the home network. You might have wireless dead spots in your house. You probably don't have Ethernet in your walls. But chances are, you've got at least one electrical outlet in every room in your house. Powerline can boldly go where no Internet connection has gone before. Besides, you can't beat powerline adapters for simple set-up and ease-of-use."

NETGEAR has a well-documented track record of bringing the latest in powerline technologies to the market, offering a broad portfolio of powerline connectivity options optimized to deliver the highest performance, including single-port, pass-through, 4-port, and wireless extensions.
(http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters.aspx) NETGEAR is the only networking company that offers the full range of in-home distribution technologies to the retail and service provider markets, including powerline, MoCA® coax and wireless. "While wireless is becoming increasingly popular as the core technology for home networks and is often embedded into new products, its performance can be affected by many factors, including the construction materials of the building itself," said Norm Bogen, vice president of digital entertainment research for In- Stat. "Powerline can be a great complementary solution for TVs, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and other home theater devices that still require a wired connection."

Powerline 200 AV Adapter Kit (XAVB2001)
The NETGEAR Powerline 200 AV Adapter Kit (XAVB2001) is HomePlug AV-certified, featuring up to 200 Mbps performance through powerline. Its performance surpasses that of competing solutions and even that of NETGEAR's own award-winning Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (XAVB101) by up 20 percent. It's distinguished by its compact size, smaller than a deck of cards and up to 50 percent smaller than competing products. It is thus an excellent choice for consumers who are concerned that a powerline device might block an open power outlet. The NETGEAR

Powerline 200 AV Adapter Kit (XAVB2001) containing two adapters will be available worldwide in January 2010 at an MSRP in the U.S. of $149. Single adapters (XAV2001) will have an MSRP in the U.S. of $79. Photos and other information are at
http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/xavb2001.aspx.

Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter Kit (XAVB2501)
The HomePlug-certified NETGEAR Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter Kit (XAVB2501) shares the same performance and design benefits as the Powerline 200 AV Adapter Kit (XAVB2001), but differs from its sister product in offering a unique integrated filtered power socket for "pass-through" capability. This ensures that customers don't cannibalize an existing wall power socket with the adapter, which means they can connect a wider range of power-hungry devices than competing solutions while still maintaining the highest performance. The NETGEAR Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter Kit (XAVB2501) containing two adapters will be available worldwide in February 2010 at an MSRP in the U.S. of $169. Single adapters
(

XAV2501) will have an MSRP in the U.S. of $89. Photos and other information are at
http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/xavb2501.aspx.
Improved Performance, Improved Design
Both new NETGEAR products are designed to provide customers with industry-leading features at an
affordable price. For example:
• Effective throughput and speeds up to 20 percent better than competing solutions over extended
locations; a typical coverage area is up to a 5,000-square-foot home.
• Multi-colored "pick-a-plug" LEDs indicate current network performance, so the customer can
determine the strength of the powerline connection without having to look at a computer.
• Advanced energy management and standby capabilities provide wake-on-activity functionality to
reduce overall energy usage.
• Prioritized Quality of Service (QoS).
• Simple "push-and-secure" functionality enables average users to easily install and secure the
devices with 128-Bit AES encryption- no software configuration, no knowledge of networking,
and no PC required, all with the push of a button.
• Compatibility with other HomePlug AV products from NETGEAR, as well as HomePlug AVcertified
products from other vendors.
Backed by a one-year warranty and 24/7 technical support from NETGEAR, the Powerline 200 AV
Adapter Kit (XAVB2001) and the Powerline 200 AV+ Adapter Kit (XAVB2501) will be available
worldwide via leading retailers, direct marketers, e-commerce sites, and value-added resellers. For a fun

CES Innovations Award-Winning Router is First to Integrate 802.11n Wireless, ADSL2+ and
3G/4G/WiMAX for Dual WAN Capability with Failover Protection

LAS VEGAS - January 6, 2010 - NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically innovative, branded networking solutions, today announced two full-featured new routers for connecting to 3G/4G/WiMAX cellular networks. The 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Wireless-N Router (MBRN3000) combines 802.11n wireless with connectivity to a high-speed cellular network via an external 3G/4G/WiMAX™ modem. The second router is the Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem - Mobile Broadband Edition (DGN2200M), which not only combines 802.11n wireless and support for 3G/4G/WiMAX cellular connectivity, but includes a built-in ADSL2+ modem as well, making it the industry's first Wireless-N router to enable a DSL connection along with a 3G/4G/WiMAX failover option. As evidence of its industry-leading features, the NETGEAR Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem - Mobile Broadband Edition (DGN2200M) is an honoree in the Home Networking category of the Consumer Electronics Show Innovations 2010 Design and Engineering Awards, the industry's highest accolade. NETGEAR will introduce its new products at two press events today in conjunction with the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. See today's press release, "NETGEAR
Introduces New Solutions at Consumer Electronics Show To Enable Any Media on Any Screen,
Anywhere at Anytime" at http://www.netgear.com/About/PressReleases/en-US/2010/20100105a.aspx.

The award-winning Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem - Mobile Broadband Edition (DGN2200M) is the first wireless-N router in the retail market to offer a dual Wide Area Network (WAN) option for a failover 3G/4G/WiMAX Internet connection in case of DSL outage - ideal for small businesses that need a reliable backup Internet connection with zero downtime. Competing routers do not offer failover; are regionally focused with limited mobile operators; have shorter wireless range; are limited by how many wireless devices can connect simultaneously; or are without the capabilities of a full-featured

News Release
router. The Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem – Mobile Broadband Edition addresses all of these issues, and sets a new bar for features and performance combined in a single router.
Both new NETGEAR mobile broadband routers can be used as a primary Internet connection in situations where no connection to a DSL, cable, fiber, or satellite network exists. By plugging an external 3G/4G/WiMAX modem into the new NETGEAR routers, customers can quickly set up a fixed or mobile Wi-Fi® hotspot virtually anytime, anywhere, with the ability to share a single high-speed cellular subscription with multiple Wi-Fi enabled devices such as a PC, iPhone™, iPod Touch®, PSP®, etc. The routers are ideal for mobile professionals, emergency response teams, construction crews, satellite offices and rural locations - wherever the group needs to quickly set up an Internet connection with both wireless and cellular connectivity options, and avoid expensive access charges or searching for Wi-Fi hotpots.

"At NETGEAR, we listen to our customers to determine what new features and technologies we should integrate into our products to address their individual lifestyles and business needs. And while connecting via DSL, cable, fiber and satellite broadband are always viable options, high-speed cellular networks are growing at a phenomenal rate," said Som Pal Choudhury, NETGEAR's senior product line manager for advanced wireless products. "Our new routers offer customers the performance of Wireless-N with the flexibility of connections via DSL or cellular networks, along with a lengthy set of features unique to NETGEAR products catering to the home and small businesses. At NETGEAR, we strive to offer our customers more networking choices, with more differentiated features, to support their increasingly connected lifestyles and business needs."

Proven Compatibility
Cellular network connections for routers are becoming increasing popular in many countries as backup for DSL, as the cellular networks already offer speeds close to, or even exceeding, wired options. Cellular networks also offer an alternative option in locations where there are no high-speed wired Internet connections available, or satellite connections and wired options are too expensive. The new NETGEAR mobile broadband routers are compatible, scalable and rigorously tested with top cellular carrier networks worldwide. Because mobile networks are unique to every country, both new NETGEAR routers have been proven with over 50 3G/4G/WiMAX USB modems from different manufacturers, across a number of top tier cellular networks worldwide. This gives flexibility to end customers to switch from one cellular provider to another at any time.

A Unique Combination of Features
The new NETGEAR mobile broadband routers share many unique features not previously bundled into a
single device, including:
• Auto-detection capabilities for customers to select their country and the cellular service provider
name for a hassle-free, plug-and-play setup.
• Live Parental Controls and content filtering for homes and small businesses, to make the network
safer, more reliable and productive. Powered by OpenDNS®, this centralized rich web filtering
solution protects any device on the network, including smartphones, PCs, gaming consoles or any
Internet-enabled device from a single web-based interface - and absolutely free to NETGEAR
customers.
• Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), VPN (Virtual Private Network) pass-through and Denial of
Service protection.
• Guest networks (multiple SSID) capability to enable customers to set up multiple wireless
networks within a home or small business. This is especially useful for setting up a dedicated
network for guests to give them access to the Internet, but not other resources and files on the
network.
• Automatic Quality of Service (QoS) for reliable video, voice and gaming.
• A broadband usage meter to ensure accurate measurement of download Internet traffic (via DSL
and/or cellular networks) with customized alerts when close to the monthly bandwidth threshold,
to help avoid excess usage charges.
• Push 'N' Connect with industry standard Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) for securely connecting
devices at the touch of a button.
• On/off switches for both power and Wi-Fi to help customers conserve energy.
• A compact sleek casing with LED indicators that can be viewed at any 180-degree angle, which
can be positioned horizontally, vertically or even wall-mounted.
• Optional car power charger and a battery pack for complete mobile usage.
Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem - Mobile Broadband Edition (DGN2200M)
The CES Innovations Award-winning Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem (DGN2200M) is an 802.11n wireless router with dual Internet access options: to a DSL network via a built-in ADSL2+ modem and to a high-speed cellular network via an external 3G/4G/WiMAX USB modem. It is the first wireless-N router in the retail market to offer customers an automatic DSL-to-3G/4G/WiMAX cellular failover feature in case of a DSL outage, critical for businesses. During an outage, its integrated DSL modem temporarily routes Internet traffic to the secondary cellular broadband network via the external 3G/4G/WiMAX modem. When the backup cellular option is not in use, the router can be used to share a USB storage device thanks to the integration of NETGEAR ReadyShare®, which provides fast and easy access for any computer in the network to access a single external USB storage device. The Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem – Mobile Broadband Edition has been rigorously tested and proven for compatibility with top DSL and cellular carrier networks worldwide.
The Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem – Mobile Broadband Edition (DGN2200M) will be
available worldwide in April 2010 at an MSRP in the U.S. of $179. Photos and other information are at
http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WirelessNRoutersandGateways/DGN2200M.aspx.

3G/4G Mobile Broadband Wireless-N Router (MBRN3000)
The 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Wireless-N Router (MBRN3000) for consumers and small businesses unites 802.11n wireless and access to cellular networks via an external 3G/4G/WiMAX USB modem. Windows Mobile 7 is coming this year LG says

Check it: LG just mentioned that Windows Mobile 7 will be in handsets this year. This would be the most official recent affirmation we've seen from any top-tier company of the 2010 date -- but no, they're not showing any hardware running it here, so it remains more of a magical, world peace-creating concept than an actual product. The wait, it seems, continues -- but at least we're feeling a little better about setting the countdown clock.

22 Percent of Laptops sold are netbooks

The notebook PC market grew past the 38 million-mark in units in the second quarter of this year. According to DisplaySearch Q3-09 quarterly notebook PC shipment and forecast report, the mini-note PC (netbook) market was particularly strong, growing 40 per cent quarter on quarter.

The strong growth of mini-note PCs drove their share of the portable computer market to 22.2 per cent in Q2 2009. Asus, the pioneer in mini-note PCs, has been steadily losing share because tier-one brands such as Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba have become increasingly aggressive in this segment.

Mini-note penetration in Latin America and Greater China is higher than notebook PC penetration. The low prices of mini-note PCs make these products more affordable for these emerging markets, and these regions have many first-time PC buyers, who are less likely to require all the bells and whistles available on a larger mainstream notebook PC.

In many regions, telecom providers have been offering subsidised mini-notes for several quarters, which helped propel growth. In Western European countries, a number of telecom firms are subsidising 100 per cent of the price of the mini-note when the customer signs a two-year data plan contract.

In North America, telecom providers are aggressively marketing mini-notes with a two-year data plan contract, while some cable providers are offering heavily discounted mini-notes as an incentive to sign a contract for cable TV, internet and phone service. The incentives have been quite successful in Europe. In North America, these promotions were only test-marketed in Q2 2009, so there is insufficient data to determine if they will achieve the same measure of success.

Mini-notes have been a significant contributor to the growth in the portable PC market as their very attractive price points make owning a secondary computer viable for many consumers.

“Mini-note PC screen sizes have increased steadily, from seven inches to 8.9 inches and then to 10.2 inches. However, the higher prices of these larger netbooks diminish their cost advantage. In addition to many key players, Microsoft is planning to increase the asking price of mini-notes. A significant increase to the asking price of mini-notes may deter consumers who are predominantly using mini-notes as secondary PCs,” said John F Jacobs, Director of Notebook Market Research.

Nintendo sez DS successor will sport motion control, better graphics; Wii Vitality Sensor in July

In an interview with Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper, Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata provided some rare commentary on what we might expect from a DS successor – not just another DS revision, mind you – whenever the gaming giant gets the urge to upgrade its golden goose. "[It will have] highly detailed graphics," Iwata said, giving ample (but obvious!) fuel to those NVIDIA Tegra on DS rumors. "And it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing." Now, before you do that annoying cough thing while saying "iPhone" under your breath, we'd like to remind you that Nintendo isn't really an also-ran to this motion-controlled gaming thing. Iwata made a point of saying that an iPhone-esque monthly cellular data plan wasn't in the works; however, that doesn't rule out a Kindle-like data service for the future handheld, as the executive previously mused about, providing for "free" gaming downloads on the go.

Now that the boring kid stuff has been put to bed, we can take the mature news out of the cabinet: The pulse-detecting Wii Vitality Sensor will make an appearance at a press conference in July (hey, that's E3 time) with plans for a release "as soon as possible." We trust you guys can take care of the old people jokes yourselves, right?

G-Day: Google unveils 'iPhone killer' Nexus One, which is faster and lighter than rival

Google unveiled its first mobile phone last night to take on its rival Apple.

The Nexus One handset uses software designed by the internet giant and will take on the dominant iPhone, which is used by 25million people worldwide.

Its launch, coupled with the launch of an internet store for customers to purchase the phone, is likely to prompt an explosive marketing battle between Google and Apple for supremacy.

The Nexus One has 3D features such as moving wallpaper and harnesses Google creations such as Google Streetview, Latitude and Gmail

Technology experts believe the next three years will provide the key battleground as to who will dominate the handheld gadget market.

As a result of innovations such as the iPhone, fewer devices are needed to perform an array of functions such as listening to music, watching TV, playing games and talking on the phone.

Mario Queiroz, Google's vice-president of product management, launched the phone at a press conference in California yesterday.

'It is the next step in Android evolution. It is where the web meets the phone,' he said.

Android is an operating system developed two years ago by Google for other companies to use its apps.

People in the U.S. can buy an unlocked version of the Nexus from today for $529 (£331) or with a T Mobile contract for $179 (£112).

Unlocked means customers can use any Sim card whereas with the iPhone user is the UK must have phone package from one of three providers.

The Nexus will be available in the UK through Vodaphone this spring, although no exact launch date was given.

The smartphone has similar dimensions to the iPhone and is 11mm deep and weighs 130g.

However, not only does the Nexus have a bigger screen (3.7in compared to the iPhone's 3.5in) - it also has an OLED screen. This gives brighter colours and better contrast than the iPhone's LCD screen.

The Nexus should also take better pictures with a 5MP camera with LED flash, compared with iPhone's 3MP camera.

Nexus One has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which means users will be able to use multiple apps without losing any speed. This is far more powerful than the 600 MHz processor on the iPhone 3GS.

It runs on Android 2.1 - the latest version of Google software. This offers Google Maps Navigation, which effectively acts as a car sat-nav, multiple Gmail accounts and thousands of applications through the android market.

Other features include a trackball that pulses one of three colours to indicate an incoming e-mail, call or text message.

There are two microphones on the Nexus, which Google says cancels out background noise allowing a clear call on a busy street. The phone will also recognise when it is moved from outside to inside and will change screen brightness accordingly.

Google product manager Erick Tseng said they were also eager to show how '3D' could add to the phone user's experience.

'You really have a mini computer in your pocket,' he added.

'We wanted to show just how far 3D has come. We have live wallpapers that have a ripple effect, desktop icons with added depth and a new gallery application where you can tip photos away from you to get a better view.'

Another new application uses voice recognition, so phone users can talk into the phone and the Nexus will type out their speech.

This can then be e-mailed or texted to others. Google said the app would be 'trained' to the user's voice the more it was used.

The iPhone doesn't have this function built in, but there are a number of applications in the App store that will turn your voice into text.

No one at Google would be drawn on whether the Nexus One would live up to its billing as an 'iPhone killer'.

'It's a "super phone", and it provides choice for the customer,' said Mr Queiroz in response.

The new Nexus One is available through Google's webstore

The Nexus One is currently only available to customers in the U.S. Britons must wait until the spring before they can buy one

The Nexus One is named after a type of ‘replicant’ cyborg in Ridley Scott’s cult science-fiction film Blade Runner. It has a sci-fi looking two-dimensional bar code on the back which identifies each handset.

Google's phone is a big step for the search giant that, until now, has offered phones only in partnership with other companies.

It set its sights on developing its own so-called ‘smartphone’ because they are becoming an increasingly important way of accessing the internet.

As more people go online using their mobile phones, the firm aims to deliver more ads to them.

The search engine giant hopes to take on Apple’s iconic iPhone, which has become, since its launch in 2007, the benchmark in the rapidly growing market.

Google revealed its open-source Android operating system nearly two years ago.

Until now, the company has been content to let other companies such as Samsung and Motorola design devices relying on Android.

And those devices thus far have largely been distributed like most other mobile phones, tethered to major wireless carriers which typically require buyers to lock in to contracts in return for discounts on the handsets.

But Google now appears to be ready to push its operating system in a new direction while trying to give consumers more flexibility to connect a mobile phone with the wireless carrier of their choice.

The Google briefing is likely to overshadow the opening tomorrow of the world's biggest gadgets show, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The next development from Apple, to be released later this month, is expected to launch a tablet-style computer, possibly called the iSlate.

First technology reviews

 Nexus One phone

TechCrunch: This is the best Android powered phone to date. It’s also the fastest and most elegant smartphone on the market today, solidly beating the iPhone in most ways.

If you are looking to buy a high-end smartphone right now, this is the phone for you.

Positives:The screen is bright and alive, and an absolute pleasure to use.

Negatives: All this hardware bling is an energy hog. The battery life is woefully brief, even by iPhone standards.

CNET News: It's a good phone, but does it break new ground for consumers? Not so much.

Positives: It has active noise cancellation and voice control, both very cool. It has nice integration with online services like Google Maps and Facebook.

Negatives: It's not revolutionary the way the iPhone was.

Engadget: The Nexus One is at its core just another Android smartphone. It's a particularly good one, don't get us wrong - but it's not in any way Earth-shattering.

Positives: The handset generally feels trimmer and more svelte than an iPhone. Camera a big improvement and we loved the Gallery application.

Negatives:OLED screen has problems with colour balance. The reds and oranges seemed overblown and saturated. The phone is fast but not so much of a leap up from the Droid that we were expecting.

TechRadar UK: Irrespective of all this Google hype it is still an awesome phone.

Positives: In our eyes, it's the perfect size for an internet and media glutton. The Snapdragon processor is a nippy beast.

Negatives: Multi-touch pinch and zoom is not included. How can a phone compete with Apple's iPhone if it doesn't perform its coolest tricks?
