Explanation of EIGRP Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL)

Mar 3, 2009

  • Maintaining a table of loop-free paths to every destination
  • DUAL saves all paths in the topology table.
  • Selects lowest cost , loop free paths to each destination
  • DUAL enables EIGRP routers to determine whether a path advertised by a neighbor is looped or loop-free, and allows a router running EIGRP to find alternate paths without waiting on updates from other routers.
  • EIGRP employs four key technologies, including neighbor discover/recovery, Reliable Transport Protocol (RTP), Diffusing Update ALgorithm (DUAL) finite-state machine, and a modular architecture that enables support for new protocols to be easily added to an existing network.
  • DUAL use AD & FD to select the best Path
  • An EIGRP router receives advertisements from each neighbor that lists the advertised distance (AD) and feasible distance (FD) to a route.
  • AD is the metric from the neighbor to the network. FD is the metric from this router, through the neighbor, to the network.

Learn about EIGRP Metric

Cisco’s EIGRP uses metrics; Delay, Bandwidth, Reliability and Load. MTU is NOT used in the calculation of the metric, however the MTU is tracked through the path to find the smallest MTU.EIGRP only uses Delay and Bandwidth with Bandwidth taking precedence

  • Bandwidth
  • Delay
  • Reliability
  • Load

EIGRP Metric = 256*((K1*Bw) + (K2*Bw)/(256-Load) + (K3*Delay)*(K5/(Reliability + K4)))

The k values are constants. Their default values are: k1 = 1, k2 = 0, k3 = 1, k4 = 0, and k5 = 0. If k5 = 0

Lenovo IdeaPad Y530

The Y530 uses Intel processors from the Centrino 2 lineup; our model came with a P7350, 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 250GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, and last but not least a dedicated GeForce 9300M GPU.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10

Seeing that a majority of netbooks are based on the Intel Atom N270 CPU, GMA950 graphics, and Windows XP Home as the operating system (the s10 being no exception), you have to look at what other features it brings to the table. Besides the eye-pleasing and MacBook-like design, the base model of Lenovo's S10 is actually not that well equipped compared to similar netbooks. It has an 80GB hard drive and only 512MB of RAM.

Apple MacBook

For starters, a fair share of the new MacBook's circuitry comes from Nvidia instead of Intel. Most notably the 9400M integrated graphics, which is a big step up from the Intel X3100 found in the white MacBook. Apple claims it has five times the performance over the Intel IGP, but in the real world the difference is actually even more significant - the 9400M lets you to play some recent games whereas the old and tired Intel X3100 certainly does not.

Toshiba Qosmio G45

With Blu-ray winning HD format war, Toshiba attempted to release an HD solution in the Qosmio G45 laptop. The laptop comes with a HD-DVD burner as well as a plethora of features to support a theater-like experience starting from the powerful speakers to the razor sharp 17-inch widescreen display Large and in charge, the Qosmio G45 comes with a black-piano finish lid that contrasts the white keyboard. Although the aesthetic design is quite impressive, picking up the laptop isnâ??t quite impressive. The laptop weighs in at a massive 10 pounds, which will either break your back or enlarge your biceps.
