5 Top Tips for Buying Dell Laptops Dell Inspiron iM1012-687OBK Mini 1012 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook - Up to 8 Hours 8 Minutes of Battery LifeDe

Dell Inspiron iM1012-687OBK Mini 1012 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook - Up to 8 Hours 8 Minutes of Battery LifeDell is one of the largest and most recognizable computer manufacturers in the world. A Fortune 500 company, they are known for building and selling relatively cheap windows based computers and accessories. If you are in the market for an inexpensive and reliable notebook, a dell laptop can be a decent investment. Here are some guidelines to help you get the most value when shopping for dell laptops.
Tip 1: Determine What You Want From Your Computer
Figure out in advance what you want your computer to be capable of. For instance, if you want a notebook simply for browsing the internet, checking email and casual use, a lower end Inspiron or netbook might be the best value for your money. Middle end Dell laptops like the Vostro series feature multi-core processors and screens up to 17 inches, which makes them ideal for watching DVDs and downloaded movies up to 720p. For high resolution movies, gaming and graphic developers, Alienware units are available but pricey. Make sure you know the system requirements for the game you want to play and that you choose a graphics card and processor capable of not only handling the current generation but ongoing into the future.
Tip 2: Bargain Hunt
There is no reason you should ever pay full price on Dell laptops. There is always a sale for whatever item you are looking to acquire, and plenty of coupons floating around the net. The key number you should be targeting is 25%. If you are in the market for Dell laptops, it is also a good idea to create an account with the Dell website and sign up for their monthly catalog. Each catalog comes with a number of coupon codes you can use to decrease the price. There are some that can even be stacked on top of each other, or used in conjunction with other shipping deals, but this is not common. Internet coupons are also all over the net, sometimes offering substantially higher percentage deals on Dell laptops than the official website promotion.
Tip 3: Do Not Upgrade Parts, Upgrade Tiers
Dell laptops allow you to customize or upgrade any particular accessory, whether it be a Blu-Ray drive, the screen resolution, the hard drive or the processor, but this will likely significantly raise the cost of your notebook. It is probably wiser to simply upgrade from tier to tier in order to capture the best deal. Upgrading specific parts of your computer, whether it's the processor, the graphics card, or the hard drive may seem like a good deal, but it can significantly diminish the amount of your discount. Most Dell laptops offer deals that are a set value, so while the offer may be thirty percent as it stands, upgrading can drop that percentage to where your savings are minimal. It's far better to go to a higher tier, where the upgrades are in place and the discounts are proportionally elevated.
Tip 4: Don't Think You Have to Buy Now
Many of these sales for Dell laptops have a specific end date, but you should in no way feel pressure to purchase now. This is a sales tactic, and in truth the very same or similar deal will no doubt crop up a month later. However, this does not mean that waiting an inordinate amount of time will decrease the price. Most of the time, price drops for electronics happen when a new technology hits the market, not as a result of any specific time frame. For example, if a new Intel chip is set to be released next year, it makes no difference if you wait to buy between summer and winter. On the other hand, the difference between purchasing in the winter and the following spring might be huge.
Tip 5: If You're On a Budget Try the Outlet
If you don't mind refurbished items, Dell laptops can be purchased for steep discounts from the Dell Outlet store. Vostro, Latitude, and Precision Workstation products can be found for almost half the cost of buying new. With all refurbished, products, Dell offers the same limited warranty and 21-day return policy as it does for its other products.
Dell laptops have always been great quality that are inexpensive, long lasting, and have an elegant design. They come with a good warranty package and all their materials are environmentally safe.

What Matters Most When Buying Laptop Computers? Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036 LED TruBrite 14-Inch Laptop (Black)A lot of homes now have one or more

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036 LED TruBrite 14-Inch Laptop (Black)A lot of homes now have one or more computers that are used frequently either for work or leisure purposes, the popularity of home broadband has meant that a lot more people are now connected to the internet and it is now considered a standard utility alongside water, electricity and gas by most people. In many homes there isn't enough room for a desktop PC to be allocated a space to sit; instead a laptop computer will be the preferred option.
Laptops are now preferred in homes as they can be stored away when they aren't needed and not take up large amounts of space when they are in use, as the name implies they can literally be sat on your lap whether you are sat on a couch or at a table you can check emails, watch videos and listen to music at ease with a laptop computer.
The issue is that some people may be confused over what to look for with laptops computers as today's cutting edge can quickly be succeeded by something faster and more powerful in the world of computing, this makes it important to buy the right computer for your needs and make sure that you won't need to buy another new computer for a number of years.
Laptops used to be considered as slower or less powerful compared to desktops as the components would obviously receive less power from a battery than from direct mains power and compromises will have been made to make sure that the laptop isn't too heavy and oversized too. These days though processor manufacturers such as Intel and AMD have made sure their mobile parts are just as capable as their desktop counterparts for the best performance on the move or at home or work.
The other parts of a laptop that you may need to consider are the display and keyboard size; some people prefer smaller computers but will need to have smaller keyboards and screens as a trade off. Some may struggle to use a smaller screen so they may choose larger sized screens which can be as large as 17 inches on some larger models. Most laptops will have external display outputs that can connect to larger monitors or even HDTVs so you can use an external display but the keyboard may still be an issue as some may have difficulty typing on smaller or compressed keyboards.
It is worthwhile doing research before any purchase of a laptop to make sure you know what specifications are best for your needs as well as testing keyboards and displays to make sure you are comfortable with them as you will be using them a lot.
When buying Laptops make sure that you have looked at a wide range of makes and models of computers before you commit to buy so you are sure you are getting the best deal.

How to Pick Proper Hardware for My Server? What Is ECC Memory, RAID Controller, Server Hard Drives Error Correction Codes for Non-Volatile MemoriesWh

Error Correction Codes for Non-Volatile MemoriesWhat really determines the hardware requirements for a server? What processor should I get? How much RAM? Do I need a hardware RAID controller? What hard drives should I choose?
To answer all of this we first have to figure out what the server is going to be used for. If we are doing heavy compilation on the server we will need a lot of RAM and a fast clocked CPU, if we are hosting a web server, the CPU clock speed is less important, but instead a server needs plenty of RAM. It's important to know the minimum requirements for any application the server will be running.
What is a difference between a server and a desktop PC?
So you might be wondering what is the difference between a server and powerful desktop PC running an Intel i7 processor for example? Well there are two main differences, the ability of the server based system to utilize ECC memory (Error Correction Codes) and the sheer size of the memory that most server motherboards will accept compared to a desktop. Because the server usually run 24-7 while utilizing large amounts of RAM and usually operating at almost full capacity, it's very possible memory errors can occur. To prevent a crash servers utilize ECC memory that uses Triple Modular Redundancy or Hamming Code as the primary methods of detection and elimination of errors. So if this will be a server that will remain on 24-7 and you will need more than 12 GB of rams (usually the maximum that will fit into a desktop PC), I strongly suggest going with a server level motherboard/CPU and ECC RAM.
Some good general guidelines to consider when picking the server hardware:
Is the server intended to handle multiple users, or is the server used in virtualization? If so depending on how many users are logging into the server, having lots of RAM is a good idea I recommend at least 12-16 GB depending on the server configuration and what level of virtualization the server will be performing.
Will the server perform complex calculations/compiling/rendering? If that is the case, I would recommend at least 12-24 GB of RAM and a fast multi core and even dual processes server with at least an Intel Xenon level processes or an AMD Opteron. (More to come on Intel vs AMD server CPU battle)
What is RAID and do I need it in my server? RAID or (redundant array of inexpensive disks) is crucial in a server. In case of a hard drive failure it could cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to restore the server back to its previous state, using RAID a simple drive swap and the server is back to its previous state. The most optimal array for a RAID controller in a server environment is RAID 5 or a RAID 1. A minimum of 3 drives is needed for RAID 5, and at least 2 drives in a RAID 1 configuration is required. I would recommend a hardware based RAID controller instead of a cheaper software based one. Having hardware based controller card removes the burden away from the CPU especially in case of a hard drive failure, having to rebuild the array would can cause significant system slow down if done without a physical hardware controller.
What hard drives should I pick for my server? Usually not only will the larger drives perform better because they have less number of disks so the access times will be faster, but they will guarantee you ample storage for the future. Depending on what your server is used for.
File Server or on a budget
I would recommend going with large SATA 7200RPM or 5400RPM 1TB+ drives with at least 32MB of cache. I recommend brands such as Western Digital, Seagate and there has been a lot of positive rave about the new Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives as well. Due to larger disk capacity, the dencity of each disk on the drive spindle is greater, this means that the reading head of the drive only has to travel small distance while reading data, this decreases seek times in drives and significantly improves performance.
High Performance Server:
I would recommend SAS 10,000RPM or 15,000RPM drives and if money is not an object SSD drives are becoming readily available and the price has come down since their first introduction. SAS drives are hot swapable, meaning you don't need to shut your server down in case of a drive failure, simple pull the drive and the replace and the RAID controller will rebuild the data.
Picking the right server hardware is crucial in achieving smooth operations. I recommend to start by write down everything you want your server to be able to perform today and everything you MIGHT want it to do in the future. Now write down a number with a $ in front of it that will be the most you are willing to spend on this server. This will give you an idea of what type of server this will be and what hardware suites your needs the most, it becomes a balancing act between performance and budget but ultimately you are the only one that can make that decision.

Dec 17, 2010

The Advantages of Airlift Bioreactor:
1. Simple design with no moving parts or agitator for less maintenance, less risk of defects.
2. Easier sterilization (no agitator shaft parts)
3. Low Energy requirement vs stirred tank
Obviously doesn’t need the energy for the moving parts (agitator shaft).
4. Greater heat-removal vs stirred tank
At the Airlift bioreactor it doesn’t need the heat plate to control the temperature, because the Draught-Tube which is inside the bioreactor can be designed to serve as internal heat exchanger. It is difference to the Stirred tank bioreactor that needs the heat coat or plate surrounding the tank to make warm bioreactor. It is clear enough that the Airlift bioreactor has greater heat-removal compare to Stirred tank.
The Disadvantages of Airlift Bioreactor:
1. Greater air throughput and higher pressures needed
The agitation on the Airlift bioreactor is controlled by the supply air. To adjust the supply air then the higher pressure needed. And if the higher pressure of air needed then more energy consumption needed. And more cost must pay.
2. Inefficient break the foam when foaming occurs
Because there is no blades/shaft as a foam breaker compare with the stirred tank that has it at the surface.
3. NO bubbles breaker
There are no blades that used as a breaker the bubbles which produced from the air supply (sparger)

The Best Wi-Fi : New 802.11n Routers: What a difference a couple of years makes. In our first roundup of draft-802.11n Wi-Fi routers (see "Wireless R

What a difference a couple of years makes. In our first roundup of draft-802.11n Wi-Fi routers (see "Wireless Routers: The Truth About Superfast Draft-N"), we found so many problems, we couldn't recommend any of them: Firmware was buggy, interoperability between vendors was hit-and-miss, and performance was not as good as that of some enhanced, earlier-generation 802.11g routers.

As of this year, we're happy to report, those issues have largely gone away. Although the standard is still technically in draft form and final ratification of 802.11n by the IEEE isn't expected until next year, the Wi-Fi Alliance has been certifying draft-2.0 n routers for interoperability and compatibility since last year, and the final version should largely be a formality that at most may require a firmware upgrade.

And the Wi-Fi certified products are worthy updates. With link rates--the nominal connection speeds, as opposed to real-world throughput--of up to 300 megabits per second (compared with 54 mbps for standard 802.11g) and extended range (thanks to multiple smart antennas), 802.11n Wi-Fi is the first Wi-Fi technology that can rival wired 100-mbps ethernet in performance. Upgrading your home router to 802.11n is thus one of the quickest and easiest ways to improve your network.

But choosing a particular 802.11n router has become more complicated than ever because the standard covers a lot of ground that lets vendors issue a dizzying array of product options, with literally dozens of models ranging in price from $50 to $250. D-Link alone has six 802.11n routers.

To give an idea of the options, we chose two widely available models in each of three categories: under-$90 routers for people who don't need maximum performance, but who can nonetheless benefit from 802.11n's improved range and speed; midrange (about $150) models that offer top wireless speeds and gigabit ethernet; and dual-band routers ($180 to $200) that support both the crowded 2.4-GHz frequency range (used by all of the less-Expensive models and their 802.11b/g predecessors) and the relatively open 5-GHz band, with support for legacy 802.11a gear. These top-of-the-line units target users preparing for an expected influx of networked multimedia devices that need uncluttered bandwidth to stream media. (The 802.11n spec supports both frequencies.) Up to now, vendors have been focusing on the 2.4-GHz band in order to support the vast majority of legacy devices.

For a point-by-point comparison of the six routers we examined, see our chart, "Wi-Fi Draft-2.0 802.11N Routers: Good, Better, and Best."
Deconstructing the Technology

The 802.11n variant of Wi-Fi achieves its high through??put (typically four times that of 802.11g) in two ways. First, it uses MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) antenna technology to transmit more data at a time. Intelligent antennas combine streams of data arriving at different times from multi??path signals bouncing off walls, floors, and ceilings. Entry-level routers typically have two receiving and transmitting antennas; midrange and high-end models have three of each.

Second, draft-n uses channel bonding: Instead of the 20-MHz-wide channels found in previous Wi-Fi standards, 802.11n can use 40-MHz-wide channels, which in theory should double their data-carrying capacity.

Unfortunately, the limited bandwidth of the 2.4-GHz range means that just one 802.11n router using channel bonding will take up virtually the entire 2.4-GHz spectrum, leaving no room for neighboring routers, and causing severe interference. For this reason, draft-2.0's so-called good-neighbor policies require that routers ship in 20-MHz mode, and that, when in 40-MHz mode, they drop to 20-MHz operation if they sense nearby Wi-Fi nets or other 2.4-GHz devices. The top link rate in 20-MHz mode is only 150 mbps (rather than the much-advertised 300 mbps); since many users are likely to be within range of other 2.4-GHz traffic, we ran our 2.4-GHz tests with 20-MHz channels.
More Bandwidth, Less Range

The 5-GHz frequency range, however, has much more bandwidth to play with and can support multiple 40-MHz channels. It's also relatively unused (802.11a products appeared primarily in business environments), so interference is generally minimal to none. We therefore used 40-MHz channels in our 5-GHz testing of the two routers that support 5-GHz operations.

Interestingly, even with twice as much channel bandwidth, speeds in our 5-GHz testing at close range did not double; on average, they rose about 20 percent. But they were generally more consistent than the 2.4-GHz results, and throughput at close range never dropped below 40 mbps--well above the 25 mbps needed for top-quality HDTV streaming.

The downside to 5-GHz: Its higher frequency doesn't allow it to cover as large an area as 2.4-GHz draft-n. But its range is still generally far better than that of standard unenhanced 802.11g.

Another 5-GHz plus: While draft-n is backward-compatible with 802.11b and g gear in "mixed" 2.4-GHz mode, performance for n clients drops significantly on networks when b or g clients are present. But with a dual-band router, you can put newer draft-n gear that supports 5 GHz on the fast track while maintaining a slower 2.4-GHz network for older gear. We recommend a dual-band router if you need maximum performance for streaming media or networked storage--or if you can't get a good Wi-Fi signal at all due to interference from neighbors' networks.

Download Ubuntu for Your Operating System, FREE

Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and is distributed as free and open source software with additional proprietary software available.

It is named after the Southern African ethical ideology Ubuntu ("humanity towards others"). Ubuntu provides an up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, with a strong focus on usability and ease of installation. Web statistics suggest that Ubuntu's share of Linux desktop usage is about 50%, and upward trending usage as a web server.

Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, of which the vast majority are distributed under a free software license (also known as open source). The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK-based company Canonical Ltd., owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth. By keeping Ubuntu free and open source, Canonical is able to utilize the talents of community developers in Ubuntu's constituent components. Instead of selling Ubuntu for profit, Canonical creates revenue by selling technical support and from creating several services tied to Ubuntu.

Canonical endorses and provides support for three additional Ubuntu-derived operating systems: Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Ubuntu Server Edition. There are several other derivative operating systems including local language and hardware-specific versions.

Canonical releases new versions of Ubuntu every six months and supports Ubuntu for eighteen months by providing security fixes, patches to critical bugs and minor updates to programs. LTS (Long Term Support) versions, which are released every two years, are supported for three years on the desktop and five years for servers. The latest version of Ubuntu, 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), is such an LTS version, and was released on April 29, 2010. (source : wikipedia.org)

Now Update on Google Wave from Official Google Blog

Just over a year after launching it in beta at the company’s developer conference, Google has decided to shut down Wave, the real-time collaboration tool that was designed to be a cross between instant messaging, group chat and email. In a blog post, Senior VP of Operations Urs Hölzle said that while the company had high hopes for the product, and despite the fact that it had “numerous loyal fans,” Google was canceling any further development of the feature, which the Google executive admitted “has not seen the user adoption we would have liked.”

Google have always pursued innovative projects because they want to drive breakthroughs in computer science that dramatically improve our users’ lives. Last year they launched developer preview of Google Wave, a web app for real time communication and collaboration, it set a high bar for what was possible in a web browser. It showed character-by-character live typing, and the ability to drag-and-drop files from the desktop, even “playback” the history of changes—all within a browser. Developers in the audience stood and cheered. Some even waved their laptops.

Google Wave has shown the power of this technology: sharing images and other media in real time; improving spell-checking by understanding not just an individual word, but also the context of each word; and enabling third-party developers to build new tools like consumer gadgets for travel, or robots to check code.

But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption. Hence Google don't plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation. In addition, Google will work on tools so that users can easily “liberate” their content from Wave.

At the International Dyslexia Association Conference in Phoenix

Wow if only they had used Ginger to check the spelling! In any case-I just got into Phoenix yesterday where I will be helping out at the Ginger Booth at the 60th Annual International Dyslexia Association Conference. It was great meeting and talking with all of the educators who had a chance to come over and see Ginger in action. Each attendee received a free copy of Ginger which they can download to their own computer when they get home. Everyone who I spoke to yesterday was in awe as they watched Ginger process the spelling errors and make the correct suggestions. With each and every release of Ginger the spelling and grammar correction gets better and better. A new spelling intervention module will be added in the upcoming weeks that will identify specific lessons based on the students pattern of errors. Look for a post when this is released. If you are attending the conference please stop by Booth 200 and say hello. Regards from Phoenix!

iPevo 2 USB Document Camera Just Got A lot Better

I know it might seem like a little thing, but not having a carrying case for my IPEVO Point 2 View USB Document Camera at times really got in the way of carrying it with me. Since I have been using the IPEVO Point 2 View Document Camera I have kept it in the original box was somewhat bulky and would stick it in my duffel bag. when doing presentations. I have to be honest there were times that I decided not to take it because it was too bulky to carry in the original packaging. However, that all changed today when I received my IPEVO Point 2 View Document Camera Carrying Case specifically designed for the camera. The carrying case secures all of the cables and the stand and makes it an elegant portable solution which is easy to carry and store the camera. If you own the IPEVO Point 2 View USB Document Camera this is essential. I know that once you have the IPEVO Point 2 View Document Camera Carrying Case that you will be more inclined to take it with you when you are on the road and making presentations.

DAISYtoEPUB to Kindle 3 In a previous post I shared my experiences using the Kindle 3 which to date is probably the best selling eReader in the market

DAISYtoEPUB to Kindle 3

In a previous post I shared my experiences using the Kindle 3 which to date is probably the best selling eReader in the marketplace. I'm sure that the Kindle 3 will be on top of the list for gifts this holiday season with nearly every big box store carrying it. One of the reasons why I had decided to buy the Kindle 3 was that it was the only dedicated eReader that has built in text to speech. Working with a lot of students with reading disabilities I wanted to see how the Kindle could be used by them, to access their books with text to speech support. While a lot of the publishers at their discretion can turn off the text to speech component it is still exciting to think of all the ways students can access text using this device. Now imagine the ramifications of your students who have access to Bookshare being able to read their NIMAS books on their favorite eReader the Kindle. Well it is now possible and let me share with you how you can do this.

Just this week Don Johnston released a new application for the Mac and Windows called DAISYtoEPUB that can convert DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System), NIMAS and Bookshare files to the popular ePub format. The ePub format is the most popular format for ebooks and is supported natively on the iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, NOOK, and Sony Readers. If you are using the iPad, once the file is converted you can turn on VoiceOver and have the the book read aloud with the text to speech.

DAISYtoEPUB is extremely easy to use and within seconds the file is quickly converted. Once you have used DAISYtoEPUB to convert the file getting the books onto the various aforementioned devices is quite straightforward. This is not the case if you are using the Kindle. While the Kindle supports a number of different eBook formats, unfortunately it does not support ePub. However, not all is lost in the conversion. You see, using the free application Calibre, you can bring the ePub book into the Calibre library and convert it to the Mobi format which is in fact supported by the Kindle. Using Calibre you simply drag the ePub formatted book into the Calibre Library and using the Conversion tool save it as Mobi formatted file. From here I simply plugged my Kindle 3 into the computer and sent the file from the Calibre application to my Kindle 3. It really was that easy. Now when I opened my Kindle I had the NIMAS file in the Kindle and using the text to speech feature the Kindle could access and read the pages, complete with the graphics.

While it did take me a couple of steps to accomplish this - just imagine how useful a tool this can be for someone to be able to access their DAISY, Bookshare, or NIMAS files on a small and lightweight eReader like the Kindle 3. If you have any questions- please let know . I would be interested in your comments. So if you have the chance take a look at the Don Johnston's latest application- DAISYtoEPUB.
