Block viruses from entering your USB drive

Jul 28, 2009

USB drives are the most popular virus carriers these days. Here is the simple yet powerful command prompt trick with which you can create a dummy file that can block any incoming virus to your Pen drive.

1. Note down the free space in bytes left in your USB drive. To do that, just right-click with your mouse on your USB drive and select properties where you can find the Used space and free space shown in bytes.

2. Go to start-->Run... and type
cmd and click Ok to open the command prompt(DOS) window.

3. At the command prompt type the command having the syntax as follows:

fsutil file createnew [USB drive path\filename] [free space in bytes]

for example, if the drive letter for your USB drive is 'K', the free space available is 1528864758 bytes and filename you want to use is dummyfile then the command you have to type is:

fsutil file createnew k:\dummyfile 1528864768

As soon as you press ENTER after giving this command a file will be created in you USB drive occupying all the free space available.

Now your USB drive cannot accommodate any incoming viruses as it has zero free space. You can check that from your drive properties. As you can see in the image below the free space left is zero as we have created a dummy file with all the free space available in the step above.
And whenever you want to copy files to your USB drive from secured sources, just delete that dummyfile created and copy the data you wanted and again create a dummyfile that occupies the remaining free space.

This command prompt trick is the best preventive measure to block any virus form entering your USB drive.

Email Bankruptcy-The Dark Side of Your Inbox

There are various new innovations designed to make our lives easier but electronic mail has become a new hurdle for most of the people. The Inbox of our email account contains various personal as well as professional communications which sometimes may contain important and time-sensitive information. While most of people are submerged under piles of emails, others find relief through process called email bankruptcy.

Email bankruptcy means clearing out an entire email account which has become unmanageable and starting it all over again. It is similar to financial bankruptcy that involves writing off all the losses and stating all over again.
Starting afresh has big risks as we are losing all the important messages and useful data. Email bankruptcy seems like an extreme action to be taken but it also is a freeing experience from the accumulating stacks of email.

While declaring email bankruptcy, the first step would be to gather all the email address from your existing email folder and save it into the Bcc field addressed to you. The next step would be to select numerous emails to move them into trash and clear off your inbox. Usually a message is sent to all the people explaining the problem and informing the closing of the email account. The faster but less thoughtful option is to merely delete all the old messages and start over like nothing ever happened.

The best way to avoid email bankruptcy is by keeping up with your emails. If you are overwhelmed by increasing number of email in your inbox, make sure you first reply to the most important messages. People may consider shifting older emails to a different file for storage as an alternative to primary inbox folder but this may have the same effect as an email bankruptcy without completely eradicating older emails.

How to Delete Undeletable Files in Windows

It happens quite often that you want to delete a non-required file and it does not get deleted by normal method. When you try removing it by the normal delete method a message saying 'Error Deleting File or Folder' pops out saying that it cannot delete the file as the file is already in use. In such case you need to make sure that the file is not being used by some other program or it is not write protected.
The other variants of this error message include:

Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

If your are certain that the file is not write protected then here is the how you can safely delete the file:

1. Go to Start-->Run... and type CMD (or) COMMAND and press OK which open the command prompt window. Leave it open and make sure you close all other running applications.

2. Go to Run dialog box again and type TASKMGR.EXE and press OK to access the task manager. (alternatively you can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Del to go to task manager)
Now go to Processes tab and End Process named 'explorer.exe' by right clicking on it and choosing End Process.

3. Shuffle back to Command prompt without closing the task manager window. (Use Keyboard shortcut Alt+Tab). Now using DEL command, delete the file.

Syntax:
--> At the command prompt if you are in the same directory as of the file you wanted to delete, just give the following command at the command prompt

DEL (filename).(extension)

--> And if you are in the other directory, you have to specify the entire path of the file to delete it.

DEL (path of the file)\(filename).(extension)

For example, if you want to delete a file named 'movie.flv' in your G: drive, and at the command prompt you are in the C: drive then the syntax to delete the file is

DEL G:\movie.flv

4. Now, use Alt+Tab to go back to Task Manager and from the file menu choose New Task(Run...) and type explorer.exe and click OK in order to restart your Windows shell. That's it!! You have successfully removed the unwanted file from your PC.

If you find the above method of deleting the file a bit difficult, then you have to use an amazing software called 'Unlocker' which can easily kill the processes that are using the file and unlock the file so that you can easily delete or edit it.

How To Disable IP Source Routing in Windows

IP source routing is a mechanism that allows the sender to specify the path or route in a network which the network traffic should take to reach the destination.

It is completely legitimate if you use this IP source routing mechanism to discover the TCP/IP addresses of routers within a network. However, a malicious user can use source routing to learn more about a network and target it for an attack. With the IP Source Routing data hijacked, the attackers host can use the information to easily masquerade as a trusted host or client due to which disabling IP Source routing is considered as a common security measure.

Now, let's dive into the actual process of How To Disable IP Source Routing in Windows.

1. Go to Start-->Run... and type regedit or regedt32.exe and click OK.run command to open windows registryThis opens the Registry Editor window

2. From the left pane of the Registry Editor navigate to the System key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Disable Source Routing edit registry DWORD Value3. Now create a new DWORD value with the Value name 'DisableIPSourceRouting' and set its value data to 2 which disables the source routing completely (recommended for best security).

The other variants of the value data are:
0 - enables source routing
1 - disables source routing when IP forwarding is also enabled

4. Close the Registry editor and Restart Windows.

That's it!! You have successfully modified the system registry settings to disable the IP Source Routing.

Hope this helps...
Try it yourself and post in your comments.

How to convert Ntfs to FAT32??

Jul 27, 2009

o you want to convert Ntfs to FAT32??
I have a solution for your problem. Ntfs can be converted to FAT32 without losing data. Here's how. Follow the exact steps or it may cost you data loss.

Maybe I could change your mind
------------------------------
Make completely sure that you need to convert Ntfs to FAT32. You should have no reason to if you don't intend to install older OS which do to support Ntfs.
>>Disk access is faster in Ntfs than in FAT32
>>Fragmentation has less impact on performance in Ntfs. Defragmentation is also very quick.
>>Windows does not have to check disk even if it is shut down improperly. Data loss does not take place during improper shutdown on Ntfs volumes.
>>Conversion process may lead to data loss.
So think properly before doing this.

Caution:
--------
Using this program may be illegal and may cause data loss. Make sure that you have backed up your data to another HDD or CD-R before using the procedure explained...

Requirements:
-------------
1. A Computer Running Windows (95 or later)
2. A Blank FAT32 Formatted Floppy Disk
3. A Working Floppy Disk Drive
4. Minimal Amount of Knowledge on use of Computers and simple terms
5. Little bit of Patience and Discipline
6. A zip file from
7. An Unzipper (Winzip, WinRAR, Zip Genious, WinXP inbuilt Zipfile support or any Unzippers you can find)

Procedure:
----------
1. Make sure that you have 1, 2 and 3 and of course 4 and 5. Make sure that the drive you want to convert to FAT32 DOES NOT have ANY COMPRESSED and/or ENCRYPTED FILES. Decompress/Decrypt them all before proceeding.
2. Get 6 by downloading.
3. Get 7 by downloading or browsing old Digit CDs. If you have Windows XP, you don't need one.
4. Unzip pqboot.zip to any folder. Keep all the files in the same folder.
5. Read the Readme.txt (included in the pqmagic.zip) for information on how to use the program to create a bootable floppy with Partition Magic with the help of the files provided.
6. Boot with the floppy created.
7. Run pqmagic.exe from the floppy.
8. Perform the required operation. For eg., in this case, you'd want to convert Ntfs to FAT32, so in Partition Magic, choose Operations>>Convert>>Ntfs to Fat32, by selecting the drive you'd want to convert to Ntfs.
9. After the Operation is complete, take the floppy out and hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot your PC.
10. Look to see if booting is normal. It should be.
11. Be happy for what you have done.
12. DOn't forget that I have helped you.
13. Thank me (Optional).
14. Post back in the forum saying something like "The process explained by _khAttAm_ works....... It rocks" or something like that.

Result:
-------
1. At least a FAT32 drive created.
2. A happy you.

Source:
-------
The instructions are completely written by me. (you had alresdy guessed that)
The file pqmagic.zip contains the following files with their sources:
1. Readme.txt-- Written By Me
2. DI.exe-- I got it from a website. I think it was http://www.bootdisk.com in a Zip archive with some other files.
3. bootmake.exe-- I myself wrote and compiled it with the help of Quick Batch File Compiler.
4. Bootable Floppy Maker.pif-- Made it myself. It is a MS-Dos shortcut and I can make it, of course.
5. pq.img-- It is a bootable floppy image created with the help of Windows 98 'sys' command and the other files required for Partition Magic are copied onto it, in a virtual floppy drive, in a virtual environment, under MS-Virtual Machine.

Acknowlwdgement:
----------------
1. Thanks to you all for taking time to read all this @$%*.
2. Thanks to my mom who never lets me use the computer.
3. Thanks to my college where I have an exam now, so I don't want to study at all and have time for all these.

SH!T........ why am I writing all these?? And Why are you reading all these?? ..............
You have already had the job done right??

View Deleted/Removed YouTube Videos

How is thispossible? Well when a video has been removed from YouTube, it is not immediately deleted from their servers. Just like our hard drive. When we delete a file and empty the recycle bin, is it not really deleted. It is only marked as deleted and is ready to be overwritten. So if it is not being overwritten, we can still view the videos but of course not from youtube.com.

Viewing removed YouTube videos is easy. Here's how to do it.

First of all, you need to know the Video ID which is at the end of the YouTube link. An example of a YouTube video link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzeV1Ux5YlI

The video ID for the link above is UzeV1Ux5YlI

Just copy and paste it in the ID text box and click view video. Here are a few sites that is able to play deleted YouTube videos. Surprisingly, they are all not the same. I've tested a deleted video ID on all 3 sites but one of it reported that it could not find deleted video. So if you desperately need to watch a deleted video, try on all of the sites and you might get to watch it.

1. UndeleTube

- A normal deleted youtube video viewer. Works well.

2. DeletedYoutubeViewer

- This is a bit special compared to the other two because you are able to search for deleted YouTube video through the VideoID or YouTube User. If you know the user that uploaded the deleted video, you can search the user name.

3. Delutube

I did not like this site so much because there are full of advertisements. Before get to watch a video, I need to wait 4 seconds. Not only that, this is the site that couldn't find the deleted youtube video that I am looking for.

EU fines Intel $1.45 billion for sales tactics

Jul 14, 2009

BRUSSELS -

The European Union fined Intel Corp. a record euro1.06 billion ($1.45 billion) on Wednesday, saying the world's biggest computer chip maker used illegal sales tactics to shut out smaller rival AMD.

The fine exceeded a euro899 million monopoly abuse penalty for Microsoft Corp. last year. Intel called the decision "wrong" and said it would appeal.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, has about 80 percent of the world's personal computer microprocessor market — and faces just one real rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The European Commission says Intel broke EU competition law by exploiting its dominant position with a deliberate strategy to keep AMD out of the market that limited customer choice.

It said Intel gave rebates to computer manufacturers Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC for buying all or almost all their x86 computer processing units, or CPUs, from Intel and paid them to stop or delay the launch of computers based on AMD chips.

Intel president and CEO Paul Otellini said the company would appeal to the EU courts because "the decision is wrong" and "there has been absolutely zero harm to consumers." The company promised to comply with the EU order but criticized it as extremely ambiguous.

AMD's Europe president Giuliano Meroni said the EU order "will shift the power from an abusive monopolist to computer makers, retailers and above all PC consumers."

Regulators said the company also paid Germany's biggest electronics retailer, Media Saturn Holding — which owns the MediaMarkt superstores — from 2002 to 2007 to only stock Intel-based computers.

This meant workers at AMD's biggest European plant in Dresden, Germany, could not buy AMD-based personal computers at their city's main PC store.

"Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years," said EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes. "Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU's antitrust rules cannot be tolerated."

Kroes joked that Intel would now have to change its latest global ad campaign — "sponsors of tomorrow" — to proclaiming "the sponsor of the European taxpayer."

"I can give my vision of tomorrow for Intel here and now: Abide by the law," she added.

EU regulators said they calculated Intel's fine on the value of its European chip sales over the five years and three months that it broke the law. Europeans buy some 30 percent of the euro22 billion ($30 billion) in computer chips sold every year.

They could have gone even higher as EU antitrust rules allow them to levy a fine of up to 10 percent of a company's annual global turnover for each year of bad behavior. Intel's worldwide turnover was euro27.9 billion ($38.8 billion) in 2007.

European consumers group BEUC welcomed the fine and said Intel should be held to account to consumers through civil suits in European courts. So far these are rare but the EU is urging victims of antitrust action to seek damages.

"Intel should be liable to compensate the victims of its illegal practices," said Monique Goyens, head of the group. "Consumers have been paying too much for their computers and they should be compensated."

The manufacturer rebates started in 2002, the EU said, with most ending in 2005 — apart from a 2007 deal for one unidentified company to only source notebook computer chips from Intel.

Regulators said rebates that give discounts for large orders are illegal when a monopoly company makes them conditional on buying less of a rival's products or not buying them at all.

Manufacturers depend on Intel to supply most of the chips they need and faced higher costs if they lost most or all of a rebate by choosing AMD chips for even a small order.

Hewlett-Packard buys a fifth of Intel chips with Dell taking 18 percent, according to market research from Hoovers.

The discounts were so steep that only a rival that sold chips for less than they cost to make would have any chance of grabbing customers, the EU executive said.

It said AMD offered 1 million free chips to one manufacturer — which could not accept because that would lose it a rebate on many millions of other chips. It only took 160,000 free chips in the end, regulators said.

Intel's payments to manufacturers ordered the company to delay the European launch of AMD's first business desktop by six months. They were also paid to only sell the AMD line to small and medium companies and to only offer them directly to customers instead of to retailers.

Other manufacturers were paid to postpone the launch of AMD-based notebooks by several months, from September 2003 to January 2004 and from September 2006 to the end of 2006 — missing the key Christmas market.

The European Commission said Intel tried to conceal the conditions attached to these payments and details only emerged from e-mails that regulators seized in surprise raids on the companies.

Regulators refused to rule out returning to other parts of their probe where they had investigated Intel's behavior in the server market and allegations of below-cost pricing designed to hurt AMD. Intel strongly denies these charges.

The EU charges also cover a time when AMD managed to take market share from Intel by launching higher performance microprocessors for servers in 2003, previously an Intel stronghold.

Intel fought back successfully by rolling out Core chips. More recently, it has grabbed more market share with Atom chips for netbooks.

EU regulators are not the only ones chasing Intel — South Korea fined the company $21 million last year.

And the U.S. may be stepping up action. The Federal Trade Commission upgraded a probe into Intel last year — and as the Obama administration is set to take a more aggressive approach against monopoly abuse by reversing a strict interpretation of antitrust law that saw regulators shun such cases.more

Intel Launches New Desktop Processor

Following AMD’s launch of its latest server chips last week, it’s Intel’s turn to be in the spotlight.

Intel plans to launch its newest generation of desktop processors on Monday. Called Core i7, the chips are aimed at the high-end desktop and gaming market.

The move puts Intel ahead of its rival AMD by more than a few months, as AMD’s comparable desktop processor isn’t scheduled to launch until early next year.

"AMD now just doesn’t have a competitive chip against Intel on the desktop," says Patrick Wang, an analyst with brokerage firm Wedbush Morgan.

And until AMD launches its product, Intel is going to be the only option for consumers who want the latest chips for their computers, says Wang.

The Core i7 will be almost four to six times faster than Intel’s current platform, says the company, and will have greater power efficiency than ever. It is based on the 45-nanometer production technology that first appeared in a server chip called Xeon (aka Penryn), which debuted earlier this year.

The 45-nm chips utilize smaller circuitry than the previous, 65-nm generation, making them faster, and also enabling Intel to manufacture them more cheaply.

The new Core i7 chips are based on a newly designed microarchitecture called Nehalem, which includes major design changes in areas such as power management and integrated memory control.

The first three quad-core Core i7 chips from Intel will reintroduce "hyperthreading" technology, which gives the chips the ability to execute 8 threads simultaneously on 4 processing cores, greatly increasing their processing power. Hyperthreading was seen earlier in Pentium 4 chips and some Xeon processors from Intel.

Core i7 processors are also different from their predecessors in that they have "QuickPath," a new microarchitecture that integrates memory controller into each microprocessor. QuickPath will replace Front Side Bus used in
Xeon and Itanium platforms.

The move increases the bandwidth directly available to the processor, reducing lag time before a CPU can begin executing the next instruction.

"Core i7 will be one of the first Intel chips to integrate a memory controller," says Shane Rau, PC analyst at research firm IDC, "though it is something AMD has had for a while."

Intel is taking no chances with Core i7. The company has spent millions to test the chips and ensure flaws in it don’t trip it up, says The New York Times.

In the past, both Intel and AMD have paid a big price for bugs in their chips. In 1994, Intel’s Pentium chips sported a tiny error in floating-point calculation that led to a product recall.

More recently, AMD’s Barcelona range of chips that launched last year were delayed by months after discovery of flaws that among other things caused systems to lock up and crash.more

Intel and Nokia Partner To Make Future Something-Or-Other

Image representing Nokia as depicted in CrunchBase

Just as reported, Intel and Nokia had a big fancy announcement to tell everyone that they're going to be doing something together in the future—the specifics of which wasn't important (or defined) enough to mention today.

The two did say that they're going to be sharing Nokia's HSPA/3G modem technology so Intel can put those into their own equipment, and that they're going to be all up in the open source world. Other than that? Not a whole lot going on. Sounds to us like Nokia's going to be making some more N800-like devices with Intel inside. [Nokia]

All Your Cell Phones Conencted With The XLink Bluetooth Cellular Gateway

This is something I didn't know even existed until I was already agreeing to review it. The idea is that you set it up to connect all your cell phones to it when you come in and then you just have one central phone in the house to make and receive all your calls. I really is a little more elegant than it sounds at first.

XLink Bluetooth Cellular Gateway

Why would you want this?
I'll be honest... At first, it sounded cool. Then it sounded really unnecessary. After trying it out, I landed on a middle ground somewhere between pretty cool and unnecessary. So why would you want one? Anyone could have their own reasons for wanting to consolidate phone calls into a home phone. For me, it would be to have all my wife and my mutual friends be able to reach either of us via either number. It's also useful if you want to drop your cell phone on the charger and use a set of wireless home phones while your cell charges. Maybe you have a home business with several cell phones on a group plan. You could set this up to answer any of the lines from one centralized system.

How does i set up and use it?
First, I need to clarify something I wasn't initially sure about. This doesn't need an existing home phone. Actually, it doesn't really support one, either. The model I tested is the ITC-BT. For about ten bucks more, they offer the ITC-BTTN model. The core (and perhaps only) difference is that the BTTN includes an extra RJ45 connection for connecting it to an existing home phone line.

Although the instructions were all crammed onto one sheet and in multiple languages, they were pretty complete. You plug in the gateway to the wall and you connect it to a home phone via a standard RJ45 phone cable. I just used an old phone I had sitting around in my office for satellite call testing. Once it's all connected and turned on, you connect the phones to it. Make sure your bluetooth is enabled on all your cell phones and you're ready to connect. Note that you don't have to connect them at the same time if the other cell phone's owner happens to get home way later, for example. The buttons on the top of the gateway are for the three cell phone lines you can connect to it. To connect a cell phone, all I had to do was hold down one of these buttons to ready the line for pairing. Then I went into my phone's bluetooth settings and found the gateway and paired it. I then did that for a second cell phone and used the third to test. Once the cell phones are all paired, it can be hung on the wall or set on a desk or counter top.

Using it is pretty simple. Inbound calls are answered just like you'd expect to answer a home phone. The phone rings and you pick it up. Simple, right? Making calls is almost as easy. To make a call, I just had to pick up the home phone and dial. It automatically connects to the cell phone paired with the first spot on the gateway. You can "flash" over to the next line in the order to use it instead. When you move the cell phone out of range of the gateway, it unpairs from the gateway and will re-pair when it is in range again. So in theory, you could leave it set up all the time near your phone chargers and just plug your cell into the charger when you get home.

From what I understand from the documentation, you can also set it up to pass on caller ID information if your base phone has a digital display and wasn't made in the 80's like my test phone. The one thing I would miss greatly with a system like this always in place is my contact list. If you have a newer home phone system, however, some have contact list functionality that would resolve this problem.

Conclusions
For around $89, it's not going to break the bank. I don't have a lot to compare pricing on, but that seems decent. The real question is of need. If the functionality the XLink provides is worth the price tag, it's a worthwhile device. The setup and use is about as easy as you could expect for it. It doesn't feel very sturdy, but it's meant to be sitting in one spot the whole time, so that shouldn't matter. If I had the need, I'd buy one.
