CoolIT unveils slick OMNI Universal Liquid Cooling kit for AMD video cards

Oct 19, 2009

Any computer enthusiast or hard core gamer will tell you that heat is the enemy of performance. This is especially true when you start overclocking your CPU and GPU looking for added performance. Those really into overclocking look to liquid cooling or even more exotic methods for their computers. CoolIT has announced a new universal liquid cooling system for AMD video cards called the OMNI.

coolitamdvidcardliq

The liquid cooling system is designed to maximize the performance of the new video cards from AMD like the HD 5750 and HD 5770. In addition to allowing the video cards to run cooler, the OMNI is also quieter making for less noise in the work environment.

The system is factory sealed and maintenance free. Exactly how much cooling performance the OMNI provides is unknown as is availability and pricing at this time. The biggest downside to aftermarket cooling devices like this is that they will void the warranty on your video cards.

AMD Congo ultra-thin platform launch imminent

Oct 15, 2009

Launch details about AMD’s upcoming Congo ultra-thin platform have leaked, this time courtesy of talkative notebook manufacturers in leaky old Taiwan. DigiTimes claims that Congo will now arrive in late October or early November, having missed its original July launch after calls for ultra-thins turned out to be less vocal than expected. As we’ve already seen, Congo will include the dual-core Turion Neo X2 L625, Athlon Neo X2 L335/L325 and single-core Athlon Neo MV-40 processors, paired with the AMD M780G chipset.

For now, though, it seems HP is the biggest advocate of Congo – despite AMD remaining pretty much silent on the whole thing – with at least two notebooks already using Congo-series processors. Meanwhile Congo is only the start of AMD’s ultra-thin assault; two more platforms, Nile and Brazos, are expected to arrive over the coming two years, though there’s no indication of what chips and chipsets they might incorporate.

FTC Opens Formal Antitrust Investigation of Intel

Oct 9, 2009

The FTC has opened a formal antitrust investigation into Intel's business practices, as revealed by an Intel press release issued Friday in response to a subpoena. Not just Intel, but rival AMD and several PC makers have begun to receive subpoenas from the commission. AMD, which has long complained about Intel's business practices, has not issued a statement yet.

You'll recall that earlier this week South Korea fined Intel $25.4 million over antitrust issues.

Intel's press release said the following:

On June 4 the U.S. FTC served a subpoena related to Intel's business practices with respect to competition in the microprocessor market. Since 2006 Intel has been working closely with the FTC on an informal inquiry into competition in the microprocessor market and has provided the commission staff with a considerable amount of information and thousands of documents. By proceeding to a subpoena, the Commission will be able to obtain not only information that Intel has already committed to provide but also information from other parties. Consistent with its standard practice Intel will work cooperatively with the FTC staff to comply with the subpoena and continue providing information.

The company believes its business practices are well within U.S. law. The evidence that this industry is fiercely competitive and working is compelling. For example, prices for microprocessors declined by 42.4 percent from 2000 to end of 2007. When competitors perform and execute the market rewards them. When they falter and under-perform the market responds accordingly.
I see a dig at AMD in that last sentence.

The investigation was authorized by William E. Kovacic, the new chairman of the FTC and has the support of the agency’s other commissioners. This was a reversal of a prior decision by Kovacic's predecessor, Deborah P. Majoras.

It should be noted, however, that FTC Chairmen are appointed directly by the President. Coming at the end of Bush's term, this definitely won't be resolved before the elections, sho who knows where the investigation will eventually end up.

Both AMD and Intel were down over 2% in Friday afternoon trading; however, this could be attributed to the poor jobs data released on Friday as well as oil news.

AMD shows off world's first DirectX 11 GPU

Jun 2, 2009

On a roll of late, aren't we AMD? Just when you thought the fun was slowing over in Taiwan, in flies this: the world's first official DirectX 11-friendly GPU demonstration. We also learned that DX 11 (and presumably, AMD cards to push it) will debut prior to the dawn of 2010, but outside of that, most everything else is being kept under wraps. Indeed, the demo was mostly to show that things were still on track and for the chip maker to assure us all that it will "deliver DirectX 11 first." Alright, AMD -- now you've something to prove. Full release is after the break.

AMD Demonstrates World's First Microsoft DirectX® 11 Graphics Processor

− AMD previews significant improvements to the digital media and gaming experience, commits to bring DirectX 11 to market first −

COMPUTEX 2009, Taipei - June 3, 2009 - At a press conference in Taipei, Taiwan today, AMD (NYSE: AMD) publicly demonstrated the world's first Microsoft DirectX® 11 graphics processor. The series of demonstrations shed new light on the significantly improved computing experience set to debut at the end of 2009.1 The fusion of AMD's new ground-breaking graphics processors with the forthcoming DirectX 11 programming interface is set to forever change both applications and PC gaming for the better. To illustrate, AMD showed numerous examples of faster application performance and new game features using the world's first true DirectX 11 graphics processor.

· Get ready for a revolution: Games and other applications are about to get a lot better as a result of AMD's new graphics hardware and DirectX 11. DirectX 11 features such as tessellation will bring consumers higher quality, superior performing games making use of 6th generation AMD technology. Another DirectX 11 feature, the compute shader, will enable AMD's DirectX 11 graphics cards to help make Windows 7 run faster in a wide number of applications and in a manner that's completely transparent to users, for example, in seamlessly accelerating the conversion of video for playback on portable media players through a drag-and-drop interface.2

· DirectX 11 done right on AMD: The development of DirectX 11 has been broadly influenced by AMD graphics technology. Each new version of DirectX builds on the versions that came before it, and many of the capabilities of DirectX 11 were pioneered on AMD GPUs, including DirectX 10.1, tessellation, compute shaders, Fetch4, custom filter anti-aliasing and high-definition ambient occlusion shading.

· Bringing consumers DirectX 11 sooner: The preview of the world's first DirectX 11 graphics processor at Computex 2009 validates AMD's commitment to delivering leading technologies to market before anyone else, and to continuing to foster innovation in computing.

· Fueling developer demand: It's not just consumers who are excited about the prospects of DirectX 11, game developers are also incredibly enthusiastic about taking advantage of new DirectX 11 hardware to bring even better games to market, in large part due to AMD's readiness to meet their DirectX 11 needs. Many developers have indicated their commitment to building DirectX 11 games initially on AMD's DirectX 11 hardware, delivering superior performance and compatibility.

"AMD has a long track record of delivering pioneering features that have gone on to become mainstays in the DirectX experience, and we're doing it again with two mature, AMD-developed technologies in DirectX 11 – tessellation and the compute shader – both of which enable a better DirectX 11 experience for consumers," said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President, AMD Products Group. "Today, we're previewing AMD's DirectX 11 graphics processor to build enthusiasm for this key technology so developers will have games available at launch and shortly thereafter. With the benefits it delivers to gaming, applications and Windows 7, developers are lining up to get their hands on our hardware, and we're confident that consumers will too."

AMD raises layoff total, sees new ATI charge

Mar 14, 2009

U.S. chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.N) said on Monday it laid off 600 workers, 100 more than first announced, and was taking yet another charge related to its $5.4 billion purchase of ATI Technolgies Inc.

AMD said it cut 600 employees in its most recent quarter, compared with the 500 it had originally planned. As a result, the company now expects to record $70 million in restructuring charges, versus the $50 million it previously predicted.

In addition, the new cost reductions would result in more charges in the first half of 2009, although AMD would not provide an estimate.

The chip maker also said it would take a goodwill impairment charge related to its 2006 acquisition of graphics chip maker ATI. AMD said its decision was "based on the results of an updated, long-term financial outlook" for the business, according to a filing with U.S. securities regulators.

The company said it could not estimate the size of the charge, which would be material and non-cash, according to the filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. A company spokesman declined to provide any further detail.

It is the latest charge AMD has taken related to its purchase of ATI. In the June quarter, the impairment charge totaled more than $800 million.

In the December quarter, AMD said it would also take a $20 million impairment charge on its investment in flash memory chip maker Spansion Inc (SPSN.O).

Shares of Sunnyvale, California-based AMD closed down 8 cents at $2.10.

AMD, ATIC Investing $4.2 Billion for New York Semiconductor Plant

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and United Arab Emirates-based Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) have formed a joint venture company that will build a $4.2 billion semiconductor factory in Malta, New York. A statement from Globalfoundries, the new company created by the partnership, says the New York chip factory will be named Fab 2 and is expected to create approximately 1,400 new direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs in the upstate New York region. The plant will use 32-nanometer (32nm) manufacturing technology to build chip circuitry that is approximately one-millionth of an inch across. Company officials say that once the plant is operational, it will be the only independently managed advanced semiconductor factory in the United States. The Albany Times Union reports that AMD was offered more than $1.2 billion in cash and tax breaks from the state in 2006, when the factory was first proposed and that Doug Grose, Globalfoundries' new CEO, says the company has until July 31st to notify the state of its plans for the build, at which time it can become eligible for those incentives.

How to reduce / lower temperature of AMD processor?

Feb 21, 2009

Your AMD laptop is too hot to handle? It is so hot that you can virtually fry a PAPAD with it or prepare a cup of hot coffee over it?

Your AMD PC are getting freezing now and then due to excessive heat?

Come summer season and you face problem like this – especially in Indian sub-continent.

You can cool down your PC / Laptop a little bit with a little utility though.

AMD had since been released a utility called cool-and-calm utility that works with certain AMD processors and certain OS. If you use Windows, try your luck with this download:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/AMD_Processor_Driver_1320053.zip

There is another one for Linux too. Search www.amd.com for your version of linux.

Simply unzip and install the above utility. It takes your processor in on-demand mode by reducing its clock speed and hence keep the temperature less by about 5-10 degree Celsius otherwise.

AMD's Six Core CPUs are running

Unlike Intel three-dual-core 220 watt monsters, AMD's are real six-core chips with HT3 consuming 95 watts. Intel will play copycat for the next 20 years...

My guess is that the HT3 cache coherence technology may indeed carry some hidden tricks, maybe something borrowed from the Horus chipset.
